About me

Whatever I write will be detail-oriented, but beyond that I can adapt to meet whatever is a client’s overall goal in what they are trying to communicate. Learning what a client is hoping to achieve with a document, choosing the best approach – whether that is direct, sensitive, humorous, emotive, or another style – and creating what it is they want, is a process that I am not only very good at, but that I immensely enjoy. I approach any task, writing included, with the thought of how to accomplish it in the most organized, efficient, and effective way. I pride myself on the quality of my work, and it is always satisfying to deliver exactly what the client had wanted to express but couldn’t write on their own.

I am fortunate that I have always had a knack for writing. One consequence of this talent has been that from high school onwards, friends and family (and even people less known to me) have asked me for help whenever they have needed to write something that they were anxious to make perfect. My education has refined my ability to write clearly and well. I’m pleased to offer my services to the public now through Varia. Clarity and properly supporting an argument are indispensable to crafting a document that has value, in that it can motivate the reader to bring the writer closer to his/her goal. The value of effective communication can’t be overstated.

For my first degree, I remained in my hometown and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree (with distinction) at the University of Victoria, which was double major in Greek and Roman Studies and in History. Next I earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Edinburgh, and then a Master's degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice (with distinction) from the University of Glasgow.

I have several years’ experience as a trustee for a federally registered charitable organization, and I also spent two years volunteering as a case worker for Victim Support Scotland, offering practical and emotional support to recent victims of crime. I have always had a strong sense of empathy, sensitivity, reliability, and hard work, as well as a clear understanding of - and a respect for - confidentiality, and my volunteer roles have given me much experience in putting all of these traits into practice. Whether in the context of my personal life or professional life, people tend to determine quite quickly that I am trustworthy, reasonable, and sensible, and the result is that they are eager to confide in me about their dilemma and hear my thoughts about it. It has always been this way. As a writer, I have noticed that my clients easily open up to me and trust me with their information, and they often remark that it feels as though I am in their head as I draw out their story onto the page. I enormously respect the trust that clients place in me, especially given that a number of clients seek my assistance during a vulnerable time in their life. I strive to do outstanding work simply because I am a perfectionist, but I am also keen to use my skills to help a client achieve justice because I care.

Clients are welcome to contribute to the development of their document at intervals when I am not actively working on it: a client can book a session with me and watch me work, can then flesh out the document themselves later (and I will probably advise what work needs to be done), and can then have a subsequent session with me. I am happy for clients to do as much of the work on their document as they are able to do.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, is where I am based, but because we needn’t meet in person, I accept clients from anywhere. Unfortunately I speak only English and so that is the only language in which I can offer service. I am a patient listener, and I am happy to work with any client for whom English is their second (or more) language and whose English skills are less than polished.
